The factory was founded by Bill Simpson, a former racing driver and safety pioneer who revolutionised the motorsport industry by introducing innovative safety equipment. Bill Simpson started his career as a racing driver in the 1960s and it was during this time that he realised that better safety equipment was needed. In 1967 he invented the first drag racing parachute and later introduced the first fire-safe driving suit. In 1979, Simpson founded Simpson Performance Products, which later became Simpson Racing Products, and began manufacturing racing helmets that offered better protection.
